Roger Bannister

Bannister set a British record in the 1500 meters but finished fourth. He was the first 4 minute miler. After his success, he then became a distinguished neurologist and Master of Pembroke College, Oxford. He was proud of himself for breaking a record that he never gave up on. But he wanted to do more and strive higher which made him become a neurologist which he was even more proud of. Becoming a neurologist impacted many people . He ended up helping his community and he achieved this with technology. 

This is an Arete experience because instead of achieving something, just one thing. He went out and achieved more and better. He did this with determination and by believing in himself.

Multi-pass Microscopy

This innovation is called the Multi-pass Microscopy, it is a new and improved microscope that helps you see and focus more on the object. This innovation was made by a Brannon Klofer, which is a Standford Graduate. This microscope makes it possible to see proteins and living cells in greater clarity. It will impact the scientist you can you this microscope to advance more in their science lab. 

The cause of that would be that many new things can be solve now that everything is clear. 

This is a great innovation because it can actually solve many problems and change the world.

Mikaele Oloa

Mikaele Oloa achieved the 2005-2006 World Fire Dance Champion. He also achieved many things not a lot of people can do like use four fire knives. This excellence was achieved by never giving up and practicing at a young age. Not a lot pf people can do something like that at the age of 5. It was all determination and motivation from his father that was willing to show him everything he knew. Technology impacted this Arete experience by giving Makaele information about how to do all of this safely. This Arete exellence is great because now a lot of people can do something like this, they are to scred to even try it. Instead he tried it when he was 5 and he never stopped tying and ended up being a champion.

MX3D

This new innovation is called the MX3D. It prints or builds bridges. This was build by the Joris Laarman Lab when he could't produce his larger creations. This will impact so many people who work making bridges. They will not have to build anymore, they will have a machine doing it for them. It will solve many problems like how long a man takes to build abridge and im pretty sure the machine will build it even faster. It will also help people around open land because there might be a a river they have to cross and this machine will make it a better for them to cross. I think its a great innovation because its making the lives of people or workers easier.

Nathan Sawaya 

Nathan Sawaya is a LEGO artist. He opened his own art studio in New York City. Known as the worlds best Lego Builder. He was also recognized as a Lego Master Builder and a Lego Certified Professional. This excellence was achieved with patience, many people are not able to achieve something like this because they don't have patience or motivation to keep going.To do something like this you have to be determined to finish the work and Nathan Sawaya did by building all his sculptures. Building something like this requires help of technology because it probably made Nathan's job easier with all the modern technology. This is a great Arete experience because this gola requires so much and can be achieved by a lot of people. I think Nathan Is an Arete person.

The Solar Cooker

This innovation is called the solar cooker. The name says it all, it uses the sun and the heat to be able to cook through solar panels. This prevents gas or electricity of being exposed too much. This will impact many people around the world who can not afford gas or electricity. The problem would be the not everyone will afford these solar cookers either. It will solve many fires cause by the gas or it will reduce the use of electricity. This is a great innovation because it can reduce a lot of problems in the world. Our world can be cleaner and with less pollution. 

Blown to Bits (Chapter 3) 

This chapter was about our security and privacy . 

It gave a lot of examples of how to be more careful of what we list or send to a friend or someone. 

One example talked about how an email can lead to people stealing your money from your bank account. This happens a lot and we shouldn't be replying to these emails or messages. It explained how there are many ways this can be prevented.

It explained the differences between something written on paper and something written in an electronic document. It says how they have the same purpose but are used differently, for example the written document on paper can be read in the bathtub and and electronic document not really but can be easily changed from place to place or revised. 

It also talked about digital cameras and megapixels and how they work. It shows examples of images the show the difference between good quality and images where you can tell the pixels even more . Shows how it works and how it has changed during time.

Alex Hattori

Alex Hattori is a 15 year old boy who has won many awards in many competitions, he even performed at nationals. This excellence was achieve by practicing and challenging himself in different levels. I'm pretty sure he would practice on his free time an made it his goal to achieve and go far with YoYos. Technology impacted this Arete experience by giving Alex the opportunity to upgrade the YoYos so he can do better and keep practicing. He had the opportunity to be seen anywhere on the internet by many people which made him famous and known and that's how he became better. He had attention on him and he wanted to do better for everyone who was watching him.

Reflection: I learned that we should not give up and always achieve our goals. By looking at the video. It made me realize how talented he is at such a young age. I think he had to work/ practice for a long time which took motivation, and determination.

Blown to Bits (Chapter 2) 

This chapter talked about many things but one main focus was GPS. GPS are devices people can use to track something or use to find a location . This GPS device has its cons and its pros . Many dangerous things can happen with the help of these devices like thieves can identify and follow another person or something valuable. It has also been a huge help in the world because it had made life easier for many of us. For example, finding a location has been easier or maybe tracking someone that hs been kidnapped can be tracked and found . It has both positive outcomes but also negative. This chapter also takes about how just like many bad people can track down other people or stuff. They can also so this by the information we put up in our computer. Nowadays, many people think it's ok to but personal information on your personal website of account, but now hackers can get all of that information and use it for something that might be really dangerous. 

This chapter also talked about privacy and how our devices are getting better but privacy is not so good. We should always think twice before we upload any information that might harm us in the future. Also how the legal system has contributed to the loss of privacy.

It talked about fingerprints and footprints and how just like we can use any print from anywhere , it can be use to find a lot of information about someone to the violate it . It says how we should also be aware of where we put our fingerprints or footprints. 

Towards the end it talked about how technology has brought to social interactions . It has changed the way of like in good and bad . 

I learned about network effect which means that if a technological device is being used, the more useful it becomes.

- Apple watch/ waterproof
- iPhone 7

The iPhone 7 is the new iPhone that comes out next week, it has many differences than the 

iPhone 6 or the older ones. This one has a different design and its earphones don't have a 

cable, it is just the ear buds. the color of the phones are different and i am so excited to get 

my hands on it. It has impacted so many people, that's why people are already purchasing it. 
This innovation will solve some problems like people having to struggle with their 

earphones and how they get tangled. This is a good innovation and a bad one because it just 

made everything simple for everyone. The earphones are great but i know they will be easy 

to lose and people are going to start to complain about them. 

"Blown to Bits"

This chapter highlights how technology had changed throughout the years and how it has impacted our lives. It gave us an example of how technology or bits have helped us in an emergency. It had also helped is be more organize like how instead of a file or paper, it is stored in a computer in bits. 

Everything is getting easier with bits and the new and improved technology. Many have been impacted and improved their life in a good way which maybe couldn't be done before in life when computers or bits didn't exist. 

This chapter also talked about all the Koans. 

Koan 1 is just how computers can store many, thousands, millions of bits and how that's is being used to store all material. 

Koan 2 is the bits can fail sometimes , in other words computers. How it can send a picture message but it wouldn't be like the original one or the one you originally sent to the other person. 

Koan 3 describes how it helps with storage everywhere that can be moved from one place to the other very easy. This has helped a lot of people because they adapt better to their job. 

Koan 4 talked about operations and how fast it is to send a message from one computer to another. The velocity has changed over the years and that has improved the lives of people today.

Koan 5 describes exponential growth has changed the world we live in. It makes the world seem different by how it works. 

Koan 6 describes how the number of bits stored keeps expanding so. Maybe economic business have used this to store all their important data. Businesses are big and what they need to store is huge which means the number of it keeps increasing. 

Koan 7 describes how bits just simply made everything easier by how fast they can move from one place to another. Life now has changed since the first computer had been made and that has been a goal being accomplished.

Carl & Margaret Karcher

Carl Karcher was the founder of Carl's Jr. Him and his wife got a lot of awards like when they were recognized with the placement of a star on the Anaheim/ Orange county Walk of Stars.

This was achieved by starting from the bottom, never giving up and improved his restaurants. He had help from his wife and he would help his wife with the business. They would work together and fought for what was theirs.

Technology impacted this Arete experience by giving Carl and Margaret Karcher new opportunities to improve their business and achieve more in life.

Reflection:

This was an arete experience because it shows how they worked together and shared a business together that was a success. A lot of people can not do that., and this couple did everything together, They fought for their business and never gave up. This can help me in life because it showed to never give up and try the impossible.

  

Computing enables innovations in every field

Lock8

This is innovation is Lock8. It helps secure a bike in the streets. Theres sensors that can tell if any chainsaws or ice sprays are being used to steal the bike. If something does happen it wells end a notification to the owners phone. It will impact the thieves because it would be harder for them to steal a bike and it will also impact the owner of the bike because they will feel safe to to leave their bikes outside in public. It will simply lower the chance of thieves stealing bikes. This innovation is great because bike owners always have trouble with people stealing their bikes and Lock8 can make it easier to trust the streets.
